Direct legal impact of the case
Despite the acquittal, this case constitutes several firsts. The proceedings by the Finnish judges mark the first time that hearings for a case concerning alleged international crimes committed during the civil wars are held in Liberia itself.
Furthermore, the findings by the Finnish judges include, for the first time, crimes committed in Liberia by governmental forces against civilians during the Second Liberian Civil War (1999–2003). This case also marks progress in Finnish jurisprudence on international crimes (see Civitas Maxima, Annual Report 2023, pp. 50–52).
