Civitas Maxima is driven by a diverse team of lawyers and professionals working across borders to document international crimes and support victims in their search for justice.

Alain Werner

Director

Alain is a Swiss lawyer registered with the Geneva Bar and holds an LL.M. from Columbia University. He has worked for the Office of the Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, including the trial of former Liberian President Charles Taylor in The Hague. He represented victims before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, the Extraordinary African Chambers in the case against former Chadian President Hissène Habré, and Liberian plaintiffs in the first Swiss criminal case for war crimes and crimes against humanity against Alieu Kosiah.

In 2019 he received the ‘Bâtonnier Michel Halpérin for Excellence’ award from the Geneva Bar Association. In 2020 he was selected as an Ashoka Fellow. In July 2024, he was admitted to the list of Counsels before the International Criminal Court.


Bérangère Pineau Soukkarieh

Head of Operations

Bérangère is a Franco-Lebanese jurist with a master’s in International Public Law from Paris and a bachelor’s in Russian from Tours. She brings fifteen years of experience in human rights and development in the MENA region, including work with Lebanese NGOs on torture prevention, arbitrary detention and enforced disappearances. She is a Board Member of the Lebanese Center for Human Rights and co-founder of Exigo Research and Communications, a consultancy operating in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Jordan.

Legal

Kristina Hon

Senior Legal Counsel

Kristina is an American attorney barred in New York and at the US Supreme Court. She holds an LL.M. in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights from the Geneva Academy, a J.D. from Seton Hall, and a Master’s in Diplomacy and International Relations. Prior to joining Civitas Maxima, she served for nearly ten years as an attorney on the defence team of a Guantánamo Bay detainee facing the death penalty before a US military commission.


Marie Bassine

Legal Counsel

Marie is a Belgian-qualified lawyer specialising in national and international criminal law. She holds a master’s from KU Leuven and an LL.M. in Public International Law from Leiden University. Prior to joining Civitas Maxima, she practised for five years as a criminal lawyer at the Brussels Bar, including on universal jurisdiction proceedings.


Giulia Fattori

Legal Counsel

Giulia is a Italian-qualified lawyer with an LL.M. from the Geneva Academy and a law degree from Bocconi University. Prior to joining Civitas Maxima, she worked as a Legal Associate at the ICRC and as a Legal Intern for the UN Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar. She is an Academic Fellow and Teaching Assistant at Bocconi University in International Criminal Law and Human Rights Law.


Rebecca Fleming

Legal Counsel

Rebecca is a German jurist holding a master’s in Economic Law and a bachelor’s in Political Sciences from Sciences Po Paris. Prior to joining Civitas Maxima, she worked at Amnesty International, TRIAL International on war crimes and crimes against humanity cases, Interpeace’s West Africa Regional Office, and as a Legal and Policy Officer at the European Commission, notably on victims’ rights.


Holly Huxtable

Legal Counsel

Holly is a UK-qualified lawyer with an advanced master’s in Public International Law from Leiden University. Prior to joining Civitas Maxima, she served as a Legal Officer at REDRESS working on universal jurisdiction and survivor-centred litigation, worked for the Office of the Prosecutor at the ECCC, and collaborated with Cambodian civil society organisations. She has also advised OSCE, the Council of Europe, and IOM on victims’ rights.


Elsa Marguet

Legal Counsel

Elsa is a French jurist holding master’s degrees in international public law and human rights law, with a specialisation in International Criminal Law. Prior to joining Civitas Maxima as Legal Counsel in 2021, she worked for defence teams at the International Criminal Court and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.


Adriana Schnyder

Legal Counsel

Adriana is a Swiss-Colombian jurist and researcher specialising in international criminal law, transitional justice, and human rights. She holds a Master’s degree in Law from the Universities of Geneva and Basel, and is finalising a doctoral thesis at the University of Geneva, where she has also lectured. She is a 2021 Tremplin Grant recipient at the University of Geneva.


Maria Teresa Tienda Rivera

Legal Counsel

Maria Teresa is a Spanish-qualified lawyer with a master’s in International Law from Geneva and an LL.M. from Duke Law School. Prior to joining Civitas Maxima as Legal Counsel in 2021, she advocated before the UN Human Rights Council, worked as a visiting professional at the ICC, and served with the UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC.


Oumayma Anis

Legal Fellow

Oumayma is a Canadian-qualified lawyer barred in Quebec, holding a J.D., two LL.M.s, and a master’s in international law and international politics from Université de Sherbrooke. Prior to joining Civitas Maxima, she interned at the IFRC’s Legal Department working on governance matters and public international law, and at UNHCR’s Human Rights Liaison Unit. She has also conducted research on human trafficking and refugee rights.


Belén Guerrero Romero

Legal Fellow

Belén is a Spanish-qualified lawyer with an LL.M. from the Geneva Academy and dual bachelor’s degrees in Law and International Studies from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Prior to joining Civitas Maxima, she interned at the International Criminal Court and completed a Legal Traineeship in International Criminal Law at the Asser Institute.

Communications

Lara Brehmer

Communications Manager

Lara is a strategic communications professional with international experience across the UN system, government and global media. She holds an MA in Journalism, an MA in Conflict and Development, a BA in Literature and French, and a law degree with a focus on human rights. At UNICEF she led global media campaigns and acted as spokesperson during humanitarian crises. With the UK Government she led the communications strategy across 28 offices. She is also a contributing journalist at Reuters.

Julia Rosso

Communications Officer

Julia studied communications and political sciences at Sciences Po Grenoble. She supports Civitas Maxima’s digital communications, social media, translation, design and press relations. Prior to joining, she completed two internships at the United Nations during her master’s degree.

Fundraising

Amanda Seilern

Head of Individual Philanthropy 

Amanda holds a BA from Oxford University and a postgraduate degree from the Courtauld Institute of Art. After a career at Sotheby’s London and as deputy director of a London gallery, she has devoted her work since 2009 to brand development, events management and fundraising in Geneva, including for B8 of Hope and Research for Life.


Nakil Bieri

Head of Institutional Fundraising 

Nakil leads institutional fundraising and donor relations. He has conducted research at the UN Office at Geneva and worked in WHO’s communications department. He holds a master’s in International Politics and History from the Geneva Graduate Institute.

Finance and Administration

Jeanette Rouvinez

Head of Finance

Jeanette has over 16 years of experience in accounting and finance across the private and non-profit sectors. She manages Civitas Maxima’s financial and administrative operations and supports GJRP’s finance capacity. She holds a bachelor’s in Accountancy from Aquinas University of Legazpi.


Feven Kiflom

Accounting and HR Officer

Feven supports Civitas Maxima’s accounting and human resources functions, covering expense management, bank reconciliation, financial reporting, HR documentation and onboarding. She holds a professional maturity in Economy and Services and a Certificate in Human Resources Administration (HRSE).
