Kunti Kamara’s trial monitoring 

Kunti Kamara a former United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy (ULIMO) commander, was arrested in France in 2018 on suspicion of allegedly committing crimes against humanity and torture during the First Liberian Civil War (1989-1996). Following a trial before the Court d’Assises in Paris, and a subsequent appeal before the Appeal Court, Mr Kamara was found guilty and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment.

First instance proceedings

First instance proceedings took place before the Cour d’Assises of Paris between  October 10 and November 2, 2022. Mr Kamara was found guilty of all the charges he was accused of, which included: rape and sexual slavery committed by his subordinates on particularly vulnerable people; subjecting a man to severe suffering and participating in the public eating of his heart; executing a sick woman who had just lost her baby because she was accused of witchcraft; subjecting two men to forced labor under inhumane conditions; and torturing a civilian. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Mr Kamara denied all charges and appealed the decision.

Appeal proceedings

Appeal proceedings were held between March 5 and March 29, 2024, before the Appeal Court Cour d’Assises of Paris. The Appear Court upheld the verdict and sentenced him to 30 years in prison.
